Elle's Dictionary

From time to time, I may have to create words or expressions to convey a particular thought. Explanations of those words/phrases will be collated here with links to the blog entries in which they first appeared.

  1. Justisplain - to offer an explanation that justifies egregious behavior. Usually this term is used in reference to explanations of Black death as being consequent upon Black action or inaction or wrong action or sometimes, existence. To say, "If you didn't exist they wouldn't have to kill you" is to justisplain your death. See how that works?;
  2. Industry of denialism - that's news (traditional and non) media that spend an inordinate amount of time creating an entirely false and ahistorical narrative to undermine the truth;
  3. Unoverlookable - "Donald Trump's various offenses, in another election year, would have been unoverlookable. In this year, not so much."
  4. Odiosity Quotient - a measure of the level of odiousness of one's actions. Unit of measure? A Trump
  5. Weaponized bigotry - public policy that enshrines bigoted beliefs into actionable steps to keep people of color locked into circumstances that limit their options and progress
  6. Latte liberals - liberals who are happy to call themselves allies, until the discussion turns to intersectionality and the particular challenges that occur at the intersection of race and class/gender/sexual orientation/sexual identity or any combination of these
  7. Ox and a moron: oxymoron ('y' is 'and' in EspaƱol)
  8. Faux-gility: that thing that we currently refer to a White fragility. Given that it isn't fragile at all but rather a brilliant means of shutting down all honest discussions of White supremacy and the systems of oppression it has created. Faux-gility manipulatively prevents any discussion of such systems, while at the same time denying the part it plays in sustaining those systems.
  9. Frasilience: the emotional state that lies between fragility and resilience. Many POC for example, live in an emotional state of frasilience. Some days they are conquerors, other days, vanquished. For a White person this would be called 'living'.
  10. Ytppul ytppuling: YY is Whiteness moving in the world in the way it best knows how: taking the path of least resistance, typically right through someone else's most sacred of spaces, directly to its destination.
  11. immoral equivalence: the suggestion that all violence is equally bad; the suggestion that the violence to put down bigotry is the same morally speaking, as the violence of bigots. If this is the case, why then do we so revere the so-called 'greatest generation' that defeated Hitler?
  12. fragilitis gravidarum: an extreme case of White fragility
